Card for the Moment: Temperance

Card for the Moment: Temperance, “Daughter of the Reconcilers,” Sagittarius. Transformation through the reconciliation of opposites, alchemy, perfect marriage, the scientific method, moderation. In Temperance we meet one of the tarot’s angels. We hear a lot about transformation and change in vague and unspecific ways, but Temperance shows us the actual recipe. It is in the reconciliation of opposites that we experience personal transformation. This sets us on the road to the Crown, Kether, the highest level of reality (see the card). This is an analogue of spiritual evolution.

On the personal level, Temperance calls us to maintain emotional equilibrium. All extremes are to be avoided. You may be called to manage a contentious situation by maintaining calm and balance. You may be doing the shadow work of confronting that moral and emotional opposite in yourself that we call “the shadow.” Too often we speak of the encounter with the shadow in in frightening, almost violent terms, but it need not be. It may mean that a writer and idea person suddenly decides to rebuild a 1939 Ford, an activity completely opposite of everything he has ever been.

If you have extremes in your personal life, Temperance calls us to confront those. Too much smoke or booze, too much rage and anger, too much time alone, too much of too much – these must be brought into balance or they will calcify into neurotic behavior.
