Card for the Moment: The Fool

Card for the Moment: The Fool, Air, “Spirit of the Æther.” Beginning of the Great Work, divine innocence, foolishness is holiness, divine madness, reason is transcended. I pulled this card near midnight on Halloween, the witches’ New Year’s Eve, so it carries portents for the year to come.

It was the great Rachel Pollack who introduced me to the idea of “the Fool’s Journey.” It remains the best single construct for understanding the tarot for me. The idea is that the major arcana charts a journey of spiritual development, running in numerical order from the beginning to the end, and then beginning again.

As The Fool, you are at the beginning. It doesn’t matter how old you are. The coming year will be one of a new work, and you will walk into it completely unconscious. You may experience divine madness and foolishness. In the material world, this can result in some serious mistakes, but they won’t matter to you. Part of The Fool is being foolish. Part of The Fool is being open to the universe, and allowing yourself to feel everything.

What is beginning in your life right now?
