Mow the Grass?

When your grass starts getting high, don’t think, “I need to mow the grass.”
Instead, think, “My bio-diverse natural wildlife habitat is doing nicely.”

Please give some thought to leaving at least part of your yard in its natural state with no mowing or application of chemicals. This is especially important if you live in an urban area. The insect population is collapsing, in part because we have eliminated so much of their habitat.

If you don’t do anything to your yard, the city will eventually write you a citation and you will be forced to clean it up. You can, however, allocate a portion of your yard to be re-wilded and natural. This will create a sanctuary for bees and butterflies. Make sure no chemicals are used in the space.

If it helps, think of this as a life-affirming spell which reaches much further than your little garden. You are helping to save the food supply and the planet one small piece at a time. If a few million people do it, it will make a difference.
