Long Night Moon

Long Night Moon

I had a great Long Night Moon. I got out some crystals and incense, and played my singing bowls. It was cloudy, but as I played my bowls the Moon slowly emerged from the clouds, radiant and magical. The SO was with me, listening to the bowls. She said, “You called the Moon.” I guess I did.

The Long Night Moon is the name given to the full moon that occurs in December, near the winter solstice and the longest night of the year. These are the most magical nights of the year. The moon is visible for longer than other full moons because it takes a high trajectory across the sky, opposite the low sun. The Long Night Moon is also known as the Cold Moon, because of the cold temperatures of winter.

It felt good to be back in the world of magick, of spirits, planets and stars. I felt no guilt in abandoning “the real world” (which isn’t all that real). I was a little high and had just finished a great supper, so my body felt good. The ancestors and other spirits seemed very close as I burned the incense and played the bowls. I played until the cold finally bit into my fingers. This morning, I awakened feeling strong and clear.

Supper had consisted of pinto beans with lots of garlic, corn bread and green onions. This is a meal that my parents fed me as a little child and I’ve always loved it. Perhaps there were times when the humble beans were all they could afford, but they never let on about their struggle. Later, when life was more accommodating, the meal of pintos and corn bread became a kind of ritual meal for us, one that to this day still brings back strong (and happy) memories, like our family’s personal Passover.

This, to me, is the meaning of “taking control of the narrative.” Do I play the bowls for the Moon and the Ancestors, or do I watch cable news and be made to feel weak and powerless? At 2:30 the wind felt like rain was moving in. I brought my magical things in, although I had wanted to leave them out all night. At 3:00 AM the thunderstorm hit. I turned off the lights and went to bed.
