bring their wars
from their fevered
impotent dreams
to visit horror
on millions
as if that might
sooth their own.

That war generation
copped a dirty deal
on life’s roulette wheel
which just seems
to keep on spinning
Truth be told
the past is clouded
with broken dreams
Would be most interesting
to speak to Harold Weedon

He died in France in 1944. The Purple Heart was awarded posthumously.

My grandfather survived Gallipoli,
only to be mustard gassed in France.
Fortunately for me, he managed to
survive that as well. His brother
was killed earlier in the Boer War,
which I’ve since leant was a case
of British bastardry, and that no
Australian soldiers should’ve been
sent there to aid and abet in the
colonial crimes of England.
