When was the last time you said to yourself, “Gee, I’m so glad I have a nose that works, that smells things the way they are, that lets me taste and enjoy food?” Never, right? Neither did I. I never thought about it, that is until Covid19 hijacked my nervous system.
People talk about a “loss of taste and smell” with Covid19. It wasn’t like that with me. It changed my taste and smell to something really unpleasant. I had to force myself to eat any food and nothing tasted the way it was supposed to. Everything tasted bad. I lost 10 lbs. in a couple of weeks, weight I didn’t really need to lose. No matter where I went there was this bitter-sweet smell in my nose that was nauseating.
I got up early Christmas morning. It was cold and clear, cold as hell. I went out onto the deck to smoke a cigarette, a habit I have. I took a breath. The air smelled normal. There was no “Covid nose.” I finished the cigarette and went in for a cup of coffee. The coffee tasted like coffee. It seemed like my own little Christmas miracle. The Covid was broken. It was done. I would be OK again.
